I’ve been working with gourds for almost 40 years. I took a class from Margo Farrin in Pasadena, traveled down to Welburn and fell in love with the Welburn Family and the gourds. I am also a passionate garden designer and dirt on hands gardener, a professional mosaic artist and an intrepid traveler and adventuress. Life inspires me to create. Sitting still and doing nothing is sheer torture, my hands want to “make”. I am a maker. I have a passion for cultures and diversity. I have passion for teaching and sharing. I have too many passions to list! As for unique skills, I continue building them daily.

I have always loved art, drawing, crafting and taking pictures. I found gourds when I was looking for seeds for my vegetable garden, and I found some gourd seeds. After I grew them, I wanted to know what to do with them. Then I found other people that love gourds and learned of more things you can do with them. I haven’t had much time to work on gourds lately, but I like to carve on them and draw (zen-tangle). I also like pine needle coiling. I think I started growing gourds and making birdhouses around 2008. I am still working and try to make time to play.

A self-taught artist most of her life. Lisa is proficient in sketching and painting. She would jump from one art form to another, never quite finding the one that spoke to her, while learning a lot.

That was until she joined her local gourd patch in 2016. Immersing herself in the world of gourd art. She won “Best of Show” the first year she entered competition. Since then, Lisa has won four, “Best of Show”, three “People’s Choice”, and a second-place finish in the 2016 American Gourd Society Artistry of the Year award. She has been written up in the American Gourd Society Magazine and the California Gourd Society Newsletter.

While still learning and creating specialty techniques for gourd art, Lisa also enjoys teaching others the joy of Gourd Art making as well as some tricks of the trade she's learned throughout her many years of sketching, painting, and finding her way through the world of art. She shows her work in Galleries, at Festivals, Open Studio and Fairs. Her work cans be purchased at her website or on Etsy at “ LBfineartgourds”. When did you get involved in gourds? At an early Welburn Gourd Festival held adjacent to their home, I saw a gourd adorned with pine needles and was intrigued.  My beginning gourd class was taught by Carol Rookstool.  What an introduction into the world of gourds – a class with the founder of California Gourd Society!

After joining CGS, I became the San Diego Patch leader in partnership with the Misti Washington Gourd & Basket Guild.  The Patch eventually separated from MWGBG and merged with the Fallbrook Gourd Patch, creating the San Diego County Gourd Artists, a wonderful, very active group.

How are you involved now?  I’m Secretary of the CGS, participate in SDCGA, and am MWGBG editor and web administrator.  These volunteer positions reinforce my love of gourd art.  I’ve learned a lot from the gourd and basketry classes offered through these groups and from my volunteer colleagues.

What are some of your other interests?  I love hiking local San Diego trails.  I volunteer at Torrey Pines State Reserve.  I joined a wine club where I volunteer to learn about harvesting, pressing and pruning activities at a winery located in Ramona (discovered through a SDCGA event!).

I have been a member of the Folsom Gourd Artists for years. My friend Mary Hufft got me interested in gourds. My first class was with Joyce Campbell. She helped me make a teapot with a gourd. My latest project with her was two Canada Geese made from swan gourds. My other hobbies are quilting, basket weaving, and pine needle crafts. I enjoy the outdoors, so I bike, kayak, hike, play tennis and pickleball as often as possible. Lucy, my cockapoo, and I enjoy our daily walks.

I’ve been an active member of the CGS since 2002. My first official event was Gourd Fair LA and second was a trip to the Welburn Gourd Farm the same year. Shortly after that I joined the Orange County Gourd Patch (OCGP), and dove into gourd classes, community events, competitions, traveled the gourd festival circuit from AZ, FL and festivals up down our state. I am currently a member of the OCGP and CGS webmaster and monitor the CGS Facebook page. Previously I was the Golden Gourd Newsletter Editor.

I don’t consider myself an artist, but I do enjoy the creative escape gourds provide and the community it supports. Outside of my deadhead and music family I have never found a group of people as talented, creative, fun, and generous as I have found with the CGS and the larger gourd community. I continue to learn and grow as I work and play with both the CGS leadership and fellow members.

Most of my gourding is an occasional play day. But mostly I collect gourd art.

I started Gourd art in 2010 after my wife discovered the Amador Patch doing a demonstration at our local library. I joined immediately as I had just retired for the third or fourth time. I went on and became Patch leader for four years. My big joy is being around a bunch of excited wacky Gourders. I am a bit of a procrastinator as I had bought two gunny sacks of gourds fifteen years before finding a patch and joining. I have always loved art but failed terribly at flat art. After retiring from 32 years firefighting with CDF I discovered wood carving, doing that for a year before getting sidetracked with another career in Regulatory work. Finally, 2010 got started. My hobbies had been centered in the outdoors until age curtailed that which helped me evolve into the arts. Gourds have risen to the top along with writing. I am at the end of completing the second of a trilogy of books and have written plays, short stories and about anything that tickled my fancy. Just writing, haven't attempted to get anything published yet. Did I mention I have severe procrastination tendencies? Looking forward to joining all those fellow Gourders and having fun!

I love being around our gourd family. I have made lifetime friendships over these years.

I have had a love for Art since a child. My grandmother, started me with oil painting at 10 years of age. I received my Fine arts degree in college. Then also my nursing degree. I work as a Radiation Oncology nurse currently, soon to retire!💕 When I worked in the ER, I would coordinate “craft night” monthly to de-stress, drink wine and unwind with friends. I have been in love with gourds since 2006, after attending a Gourd festival. I soon joined the Folsom Gourd artists. My co-workers and I create gourds during the fall and Christmas to raffle off to our patients. I enjoy the many ways to create art on a gourd, the oldest canvas around!

I have been a member of the Folsom Gourd Artists group for 6+ years and I live in Orangevale, CA with my husband Joe and Stepson, Philip. Joe is a wonderful man who puts up with all my gourds and "gourd stuff" all over the house. I went to my first gourd festival 20 years ago in a park In Folsom California. Fell in love with the idea of joining the Folsom Gourd Artists. I joined years later when I saw Marie Dellos demonstrate "Memory Inks" at Knights Landing at my second gourd festival. This time I was hooked. Contacted the club and joined. It frustrated me when I went to Gourd Classes that there weren’t any beginner classes where you didn't need expensive tools. I feel beginner projects like my "Genie Bottles" fits this idea! They are simple, fun and quick to do. Let your imagination run wild with decorating and creating your first "Genie Bottle"! I bet it won't be your last

As a newly retired woman, I was initiated into the gourd art world in 2014 through classes given at our local senior center. Classes were being taught by Charlene Smith who I like to call my “Obi Wan”. Being a person who has always liked arts and crafts of all kinds, I found that my favorite is gourd art. It seems to be an art form that has so much diversity that I don’t ever get bored and am always interested in learning new techniques. I enjoy taking classes in new and interesting ideas. This retreat in June will be my first and am looking forward to the opportunity to meet new people who also love the art and learning some new ideas.

I love gourds! I have been purchasing decorated gourds from Debra Williams for the last twelve years. It’s amazing what a gourd can be turned into. Debra always offered to teach me but I never had the time to take her up on it. Then about four years ago I attended a local event and was surprised to find gourds. The second year I attended the local event I talked to a couple of people that are part of the Ventura County Gourd Artists and decided to see more of what it was about. I have taken serval classes. I enjoy coming up with new ideas and different ways to make those ideas happen. My other hobbies, I used to love to bake, I used to make wedding cakes, cakes for the kids, it would be fun to get back to doing that. Inspires to create? A lot of time it’s something in nature and then I’ll work on creating my vision on the gourd. I also like to see other artists ideas and see what I can do to take it further. The competitions are a great way to help push me into doing different things. Passion – Gourds can be done in so many different ways between painted, wood burned, carved or even covered in clay, Quick wood, or even PowerTex. My passion is to create something unique, something that will stop a viewer in their tracks and talk to them.

 -A bit about my journey-

My introduction to gourds was about sixteen years ago. I worked for Hewlett Packard for forty-two years (I know UN heard of) and I had a group of friends that met several times throughout the year, where we made some wonderful Tole painting projects. Well, these gals Vickie Martinez and MaryAnn Savercool found GOURDS! And they made many attempts to reel me in and try this new art form. But, I thought gourds no way, all you do is paint southwest designs. Well I quickly found out that wasn’t the case and got on the gourd train. I love taking classes and learning new techniques, and made some lifelong gourd friends along the way. I’ve been involved with SDCGA Gourd Festivals, Retreats, Patch meetings, Newsletters, and Website.

Some other interest: I’m always dabbling and trying new Art mediums; painting, jewelry making, mosaics, garden art, and home decorating! Creativity has always been a part of my life since childhood, it just keeps me balanced. I consider my art style to be (fun art vs fine art)! And Love any new adventures and spending time with my family, friends, and grandkids.

I been interested in gourds going on 20 years. I think I saw my first gourd art at a painting retreat, how I was hooked! I was pretty intrigued immediately and after the first class I was definitely hooked. Other hobbies are decorative painting, card making, stained glass jewelry making and did I mention I’m a class one BEAD HORDER! I get inspiration from seeing other art forms. I’m most creative and inspired the first hour of the morning when it's quiet my ears aren't ringing yet. I have a cup of coffee and then my mind takes off without disruption. I find I really do become an artist in those early morning hours.

I became enthralled with gourds when I discovered Zittle Gourd Farm in Folsom just after I moved to the area. They offered gourd classes and membership into the Z-Gourd Miners patch (now know at the Folsom Gourd Artists) which I joined and have been a member since 2003 holding offices of Secretary and President. My other interests include The Folsom Garden Club and volunteer at the Harris Center for the Arts. I have made gourd presentations and sales for both organizations. It thrills me to start out with a raw gourd and develop a piece of art that someone appreciates and purchases. Attending various gourd patches through the US is inspiring and educational in learning new techniques and sharing with those that love gourd creations.

I’ve been interested in gourds about 20 years now, when my friend Camille King introduced me to them. When our kids hit middle or high school, she convinced me it was time to think about myself and get creative. I took her advice and attended the Moorpark Gourd Class in the morning when my kids were at school. I was hooked from my first visit to the Welburn Gourd Festival, and the couple classes I did take was so exciting. Unfortunately, it was their last year to have this event, but I was so grateful I was able to experience even if it was just the one festival. I am also a dance instructor and choreographer; I teach Clogging twice a week through Parks and Recreation. Other artistic hobbies and interests are drawing, ceramics, Macrame, and honestly anything that inspires me to be challenged in a creative project, and that I would consider being mixed media. Stress inspires me to be creative, allowing me to release or escape the day to day. I am passionate about working anything with my hands. I especially love carving, that could be with a Dremel on a gourd or carving tools and clay.

My first memory of art was when I was five in kindergarten. I found when all colors were mixed together it made mud but just two colors made magic. So not surprisingly, art was my favorite subject in school. In junior high I was introduced to organized arts and crafts. from that point on I was inspired to become an advertising graphic artist. In high school. I excelled at oil painting and won awards. Next junior college, and an associate arts degree with honors in art. During college, I landed a job at the local newspaper as a layout artist. Next thing I knew I was managing the advertising art department. Then I was running a production, printing department for the YMCA. In 1998 I was introduced to gourds at the basket, GOURD college in Visalia California. I was hooked, I taught and took Gourd classes. I have tried every medium I could think of to put on a gourd. I have tried every gourd size I could get my hands on……… ” VICTORY “now I meet about once a month with my Gourd friends. They give my life a nice flavor. I’ll be teaching at the gourds and baskets of our culture in April 2024. “Googly Eyed Characters”. I have been married for 30 years to my husband of whom I still like! He has been instrumental in the happiness and success in my life. I live in Selma, California, and my current job is certified nurse’s assistant, of which I went to school at 58. Even though it’s not artistic, it does give my life purpose. I am artistically driven by challenges and I love having fun doing it. My next goal is to become an ocularist (prosthetic, eye maker). Currently I’ve been collecting Sewing machines and working on clothes design. I’ve worked child care and driven for lyft over 3500 rides.

I started gourds over 10 years ago. My first teacher was Diane Calderwood. Later I joined San Diego patch in 2010, not going to many meetings because i felt it was too far. After our retreat in 2011, I decided it didn't matter the distance, I got so much joy from the ladies of the patch. I now go to the meetings no matter the distance. I usually have my side kick with me. (Liza Hertzman) This is the longest hobby I have had. Went through stained glass, making baskets, polymer clay, woodworking, and then discovered gourds. I was one of the first trained judges for our gourd festivals. I also judge the L.A. County fair with Diane Calderwood. Signed a devoted Gourd Gal!

I started working on gourds 10 years ago or so. (Time flies). I took a class at Welburn with a friend and instantly fell in love with gourds. We showed up at Pam’s “turtle” class with not a single tool so we begged and borrowed from others. I bought my carver and wood burner that day and the rest is history. My only regret is that I did not start sooner because the arthritis in my thumbs is limiting what I can do now. note about myself - I have been teaching first grade in the inner city of LA for 33 years. The job is tough and I definitely need my distractions. I love art, books and cats. (I have silver Persians). I am especially fond of riding my bike along the river path, kayaking and spending time with my mother at her cabin in Minnesota. Nature is my muse, inspiration and meditation.

I have been a gourd artist for 5 ½ years. I had been wood burning gifts for friends. I bought a book on “Wood burning” and low and behold there was a burned gourd. I went to a Pumpkin farm and bought their last two gourds. I heard that the Folsom Patch was having a festival so I visited. I was so intrigued, I attended their next meeting and joined the Patch. That was in 2017. I was the Treasurer for 4 years and am now the President for the last year. I am also Vice President on the CGS Board. There is a lot of knowledge and talent in our group I had great teachers. In the past I was an Interior Designer and painted on canvases, decorated cakes and I sew. My inspiration is all around me. I don’t lack for ideas; I just lack the time. I am currently learning Zen tangle.

I have been involved with gourds for a very long time, but I can't remember the exact year. I do remember first seeing them at a Folsom fall festival. I soon found and joined the Folsom Gourd Club and started learning various techniques, acquiring tools, and making new friends. I have enjoyed going to many festivals and learning from wonderful gourd teachers. In the club I've held offices of VP and Co President. I like to try new techniques so I started doing "tips and tricks” which later turned into monthly club meeting classes. I have also been a competition judge about 5 years. So, my latest adventure is being co-chairman of Nor-Cal competitions.

My love for art started when I first visited the Grand Canyon. I was always interested in Native American art, especially pottery with intricate patterns. I have tried my hand at numerous things over the years, like card making, graphic design, pottery, watercolors, oil painting, ancient forms of Indian Tanjore art, and jewelry. I finally settled down with gourd art. I am primarily self-taught and have an avid interest in learning different types of art. Because gourds are so multi-faceted, their uses are endless. Gourds come in many shapes and sizes; they can be carved, painted, pyrographed, dyed, and their rims can be woven with pine needles and other basketry materials. I can and do many different things with gourds, from a hanging gourd basket for plants to masks for wall decor. For me, weaving with pine needles and wood-burning on gourds is a great way to relax, and best of all, 100% of my art sale goes towards my NextVision charity. About my charity When I was a little girl, I accompanied my father to his small farming village in southern India. I loved being there with my father and watching as he helped people with the little money he had. After my father’s death, I didn’t want to go back to the village without him. But something in me said I needed to continue what my father had done for his village, helping the people in need. From that moment on, every summer, my sons and I would spend two weeks in the village, helping the schools with good drinking water, drilling wells, sanitation, supplying sports equipment, and other essentials. I realized early on that helping the children succeed and helping my father’s village be more self-sufficient was my calling. This is why I started a non-profit organization called NextVision Charity Inc (501c). I started making jewelry and now gourd art to fund NextVision(www.thenextvision.com). One hundred percent of the proceeds go toward my charity.

I have been involved with Gourds, Gourd Festivals and Retreats since the mid 90’s I have been a fine artist, oil and acrylic painter and animal portrait artist my whole adult life. I was burning out as a painter because my portrait work was becoming just that, WORK… My best friend introduced me to Gourds. They were fun and fellow crafters were friendly and into teaching and learning. I remember walking into Asilomar’s great hall during one of their retreats and thinking. “These are my people”. I’ve painted, carved, burned, and embellished many gourds in my day. I have not sold many mostly because I have a comfortable income from my Nursing Career and I did burn out trying to market my paintings. My gourd friends and activities are my joy in life. I am also the Patch leader of the Petaluma Gourd Artists

After receiving a free membership from my friend at work I started attending gourd classes. Barbra McDermott the Patch president of the club at that time held classes at her house. My first class was a dreamcatcher and I was hooked! Now I have classes at my house. I invited some of my other friends from work to come and play and now they are members too.

I have held several officer positions in our Patch; Class coordinator, Secretary and now the Hospitality and White Elephant Sales coordinators.

Some of my other interests include quilting, softball, rafting, camping and many adventures with my Gal Pals.

I took my first gourd class in 2002 at Welburn Gourd Farm. I had no equipment and really didn’t know what a gourd was. But my teacher Mary Segreto soon had me washing and cleaning and decorating my gourd. From that simple beginning I went crazy for gourds and bought everything I needed and more to further my artistic abilities in gourd art. I’ve always been a crafty person and love taking classes and spending time with my gourd friends. When not gourding I enjoy walking, going to Jazzercise and attending church. I am a member of SDCGA CGS and AGS

I didn’t discover gourds until I was in my 60’s: it was love at first sight. I love to grow gourds, look at them, and create art on them. Almost all of the gourds I use for my art are grown in my garden in Sacramento. I have taken some wonderful classes to learn various methods of working with gourds like woodburning, carving and using beads. I took a wood burning class from Duane Teeter and haven’t stopped since. Just after I retired, we went on a trip to Peru where I bought a bag full of small gourds for presents. I talked with the artist and she told me she burned them with a nail. She also cut one open and said I could plant the seeds. Gardening is one of my favorite things to do so I planted the seeds and grew many little gourds. They were so cute but I had no idea what to do with them except look at them. My niece (who belonged to the Calabash Gourd Group) came up for a visit and saw them and asked if she could have some. I asked what she was going to do with them and she said she was going to do this and that. I decided I wanted to do this and that too. It was downhill after that – all I wanted to do was play with gourds! My inspiration comes from so many things, a pretty card, a photo and of course classes. Other people inspire me, and I love to learn new techniques. and sometimes the gourd even shows me what to do. I am a Past President of the California Gourd Society, a certified American Gourd Society Judge and a Certified Judge Instructor for the American Gourd Society.

My gourd journey started at the 2005 Welburn Gourd festival. I wandered into the San Diego Gourd Patch booth where I met some enthusiastic & friendly Patch members…I don’t think I’ve left! Seriously, I was at a low point having recently lost my husband to cancer and this new adventure was just what I needed. With JoAnn and Sherry’s encouragement, I signed up for the gourd retreat at Warner Springs and took my first class at Vickie’s. I’ve lost count of how many gourd classes I’ve taken but I always look forward to the next one. Hobbies included succulents, gardening, cooking, clay sculpting, travel and visiting my siblings and good friends. I’m a happy retired preschool special education teacher who periodically volunteers in teacher friends’ classes. But only periodicall

I joined the Folsom Gourd Artists in 2015 after attending a few gourd festivals at Davis Ranch in the Sacramento area. I took a personal class from Joyce Campbell and became a big fan of the art form from there. I have enjoyed a past retreat and take classes whenever I get the chance. Still working on inspiration. I was president of the Folsom Gourd Artist Patch for 4 years and during that time was recruited to the California Gourd Artists board. I am currently the CGS President.

I have been a crafting person since my teens. I sewed my own clothes, stuffed animals, doll clothes and other fun stitching crafts. I taught myself to macrame. Also taught myself to make beaded jewelry which included peyote stitching. I love to look online for other fun crafty things to try.

I got hooked on gourds after attending the Folsom Gourd Festival. My gold panning partner had just gone through back surgery and she wanted to find us something that we could continue to enjoy doing together while she recovered. We were impressed with the versatility of gourds and went to Zittles “closing sale” to purchase some. A year later we joined the Folsom Gourd Artists. I love gold panning, being outdoors and travelling. I read a lot and I enjoy cross stitching. Since the early nineties I have been growing loofahs. Creating is very relaxing for me and I enjoy incorporating natural items in my art.

I have always been interested in Art and crafts. I use to crochet, macramé, tole paint and now of course, I am crazy about gourding. Recently I have also found I love succulents and doing crafts with them and gourds. I would see Gourd Art at craft shows and marvel at them. Then my friend in Tahoe gave me a small bowl with leaves burned on it. I loved it. (I believe this was around 2003 but not sure of the date.) So, I started looking for classes. If she could do this so could I. This is how I found our Gourd Patch. I became a member; took classes, and after a while started teaching classes. I am inspired by the gorgeous Art work many of our members create. I go to the festival in Arizona when I can and marvel at what I see. I have been the treasure, class coordinator, served on the host committee at different times for our Patch I have judged at some of the competitions. I love the play days we have, the classes we offer our members, but most of all the camaraderie. We are a fun loving, caring group which keeps me interested

I was given a gourd seedling at a garden show. Thinking how fun it would be to grow a couple and my intention was to make bird houses. So I took a class at Welburn Gourd Farm and met several members from the San Diego Patch there. They invited me to a Patch meeting and to make sure I showed up they volunteered to carpool with me! That’s all it took, I became a member right then and there at that meeting. I am now the Patch secretary and also Director of Southern Regional Groups for California Gourd Society.

Some other interests of mine include gardening, exploring, experimenting and engineering new art forms. And of course, collecting gourd supplies and tools, a person can’t have enough of those - right!

I was introduced to the world of Gourds in 2015 through a friend and gourd artist, Evy Eisele. I started in the Moorpark Gourd Class and fell in love with gourds as a new art medium. I have taken several classes from Gourd Teachers that have provided me a new learned skill. I like the idea of how much creativity exists, and how many options there are for art ideas with gourds. Gourd Art offers a variety of shapes and unlimited options and materials to create your art. I think I get bored quickly with repetition! My other hobbies and interests are gardening, cooking, painting, decorating, and clogging. I like the freedom that all of these hobbies provide because you can follow directions at first, and then become creative as you like to create something new. I also find that each of these hobbies allows me to “escape” for a while and feel refreshed and new after I have participated in any one of these activities.

My journey began about 21 years ago. I remember seeing a gourd decorated to look like an Indian woman while visiting in Bishop. It was so beautiful. I decided to look into making one. The Moorpark Adult center was having classes and that’s how I became “hooked”. I’ve always had hobbies and usually throw myself into them. Tole Painting was the first when my children were young. I painted on anything that would stand still and sold my creations at events. The painting is still my strong suit for making gourds. Next, I started quilting and have made them for all my children. Gourding will probably be my favorite and final passion. I’m looking forward to the retreat in Three Rivers this year with fellow enthusiasts.

My interest in gourds began as a small child, born and raised in Nigeria. The Nigerian people use gourds for everything from storing food to spoons to holding cosmetics. When I saw a class on gourd art 15 years ago, I decided to give it a try. The feel and smell of the burning gourd just took me “home”. I was hooked.

My gourds and pine needle artworks are sold through the Off Track Gallery, Encinitas; Fallbrook Art Center; on Etsy; and in person at about 15 shows throughout Southern California. My current inventory is on my website GourdsByGrace.com.

I weave baskets and crochet. I do not know what inspires me, now that I am retired. Before it was to escape! — My passion right now are my 2 dachshunds who are 14 years old.

One day I walked into an Antique shop and saw a round bowl that was painted. I picked it up and it wasn’t glass. I asked about it and was told it was a gourd. The shopkeeper told me all the different gourd societies. I went home, Googled it and I’ve been working on gourds ever since. I’ve made many, many good friends, taken numerous gourd classes, met tremendous teachers and have found my life’s second passion, (my family being first)! Thank you all.

I’ve been playing with gourds on and off for about 10 years. A friend took me to a gourd class that Pam Redhawk was teaching and loved it. I was not born a natural artist like so many of you, so I like to take classes and learn techniques from you all. I also raise chickens as a little side hobby. I’ve been a widow for over 12 years and have a son/ daughter and 4 grandkids. I split my time living near my son & family in Indio, Ca and then I spend time at my daughter’s home in the Fresno area. I’m a member of San Diego gourd patch, But I’ve only been able to attend a few classes over the last few years because I was still working. I’m retired know. Looking forward to retreat.

I have been interested in gourds for over 20 years. I was looking for something special for my craft loving mom when she visited us from Taiwan 20+ years ago. a Gourd class was the one we both enjoyed together.

The natural versatile shape of gourds inspires me to create. I like to present as much of gourd’s natural looks as possible.

I also like working with WATERCOLORS and handmade soaps.

I have been working with gourds for more than 20 years. A neighbor gave me Ginger Summit’s gourd book and told me of a local gourd club. I took a class from Kathy Riker — and I was hooked. I have been interested in various crafts and led a craft group at my church for 18 years. I paint water color and on silk. I also make greeting cards. My inspiration for gourds comes from lots of sources. I love taking classes that introduce new techniques. That always kick starts me to try something new. I love wood burning and beading on gourds best.

I started carving with wood but found myself spending the majority of my time sanding because the gouges we’re too deep. I found a class that caught my interests with Gloria Crane and it was a mask class. I think that was about six years ago. The problem with wood is they tell you the rejects just go into the kindling pile but that doesn’t work for me. I like how if there’s a mistake with a gourd, you can turn it into an opportunity… do something different, learn something new, etc. Other hobbies, Dogs! Dog competition sports to be exact. I do nose work where the dogs are trained like drug or bomb dogs but they’re looking for certain scents; Treibball which is herding and soccer combined together for the dogs. I have a puppy I am training in agility. Anything inspires me to create. Sometimes the gourd tells me what it wants - I’ll get a picture in my head almost instantly. Other times it’s an embellishment and just see the whole gourd around it. I’m still working on animals on gourds!!! I love working on gourds, but that’s not my passion. I’ve been doing massage on animals – mainly canine and equine for 16 years. I have many “regular” clients but passion is helping an animal in need. They usually reach out to me and “ask” for help. Interesting story, I was in Arkansas visiting family. I found this beautiful roadway with trees that were growing over the street. As I walked a while I discovered it was a driveway. Oops, didn’t mean to do that so I turned around. I walked maybe 100 feet when I heard leaves rustling behind me, but there was no breeze. I turned around to find a hound dog following me. I love dogs so I couldn’t help myself from stopping and talking to him. He walked up to me when I realized he was barely putting weight on a hind leg. I gingerly start to pet him being careful to be out of biting range, you never know. He allowed me to work on that area and I probably worked on it for 10 minutes, getting into a deep massage. Once I finished, I told him I was done, he walked about 10 feet from me, testing the leg. He turned around as if to say Thank you. THAT is why I do animal massage.
